The Big 4!

Dear Ellie,
This morning you woke up bright and early, I know you were so excited about turning 4 today, and asked to cuddle. How could I say no? Early mornings, cuddling with you, sharing stories, and playing I Spy at dawn are some of my favorite times. And even when you jump into my bed, curl up, and drift off to sleep again I just love to hear your breath. But this morning was even more special than most... Today is your birthday. When you curled up close, I remembered what I was doing at 5:30am just four years ago and I cried. I think I was probably doing the same thing... Laying in bed with the darkness outside and you were in my arms. I had that same feeling inside that I had this morning and that I have right now...
I love you.
This morning you asked me to tell you your birthday story. So, I told you how big my belly was just before anyone could hold you in their arms. Then I told you that I went to the doctor and she told me it was time to go to the hospital to finally meet you. I told you how your daddy and I called Meme & Papoo and Grandma & Grandpa and told them it was finally time. They all rushed to the hospital so that they could meet you. Then you asked how you came out of my belly. I wasn't ready to go into all of that so I just told you that the doctors helped... we will go into more detail another time, I promise! That is when we all found out that you were a beautiful and healthy baby girl and your daddy went to tell everyone that Ellis Ryan is here, happy, and healthy! You see, no one knew if you were a boy or a girl... That was an awesome surprise!
I love you!
You have changed so much. You aren't the baby, newborn, or toddler I once knew, you are a big girl. Your feet and legs can run, jump, skip, gallop, climb, hop, and dance! Your belly may be pickier that it used to but it still makes good choices (most of the time) but it can also hold so much more than it ever did before! Your arms help your feet and legs do all of their fabulous things and still give the best hugs in the world. Your butt, well, that hasn't changed much at all. It is still doing the same stinky things it always did but you are shaking your booty more than ever!
Your hands, your amazing hands... they can do puzzles, write words, play Barbies and babies. They draw beautiful and colorful pictures. They play music, turn pages to read books, and unhook seat belts (when it is time). However, they still rub Bird and Bah-bah. Your eyes are still big, brown, and full of questions. They still take in the whole world around you. Your mouth is always asking questions and surprising me with your knowledge of the things around you. It also gives the biggest and sweetest kisses ever.
Some things haven't changed though... Your heart, your kind and loving heart. You are tender and pure, loving and giving, honest and sincere, I hope and pray every day that this world never changes you.
I love you.
Pink... You are all girl from the shiny tiara on your head to the multi-colored pedicure on your toes. You still prefer dresses and skirts but sometimes only pants or shorts will do!
You are hard-headed, determined, independent, and have selective hearing at times. You have a 'can do' attitude when it is how, when, and where you want! You also have a 'you do' streak to yourself, specially when it is something you don't want to do, that is when you are fantastic at delegation!
You are a great sharer and an awesome mommy to all of your babies. You are eager to help and explore the world... as long as someone is there with you! You love your night time stories and riding in the car with your songs "LOUDER" and the windows down, singing at the top of our lungs!
I love you.
You make me cry, laugh, scream, smile, worry, sing, dance, and act sillier than ever. You make me... me. No matter how old or big your get you will always be my little girl and I will always want to keep you safe and out of harms way. Happy birthday, baby, I love you.
Love always,
Mommy

Happy 4th Birthday Ellie!

Today Ellie turned four and I don't think she could have been any more excited! The night before she was about to crawl out of her skin with excitement. She told me to make sure that everyone remembered to tell her "Happy Birthday" in the morning and I was not to forget!!
On Saturday we made Rice Krispy treats with sprinkles to take to school and share with our friends.
She loved being the center of attention while we all sang to her!
She wanted pepperoni pizza for dinner. She picked it on Friday and I made sure to verify it every day. I even double checked with her before I ordered it... "Yes, I want pepperoni pizza." Then we sat down to dinner... "I don't want pizza for dinner." She was lucky it was her birthday... she ended up with mac-n-cheese and apple sauce instead.
She blew out the candles in two tries and was so excited about gifts that she didn't want cake either... Go figure!
But she did lick a little icing instead!
Uncle Sean got her some activity books.
And Aunt Margie got her Princess Dominoes and a Fancy Nancy game.
Meme made her a baby bassinet with princess sheets that closes with a drawstring for baby care and naps on the go!
Taking care of her new baby in her new bed.
Thank you Meme!
And thank you Papoo!
Happy 4th birthday Ellie!!

Busy October

This month has been a whirlwind! Last night as I was putting Ellie to bed she was reminding me that the next day was her birthday and my job was to make sure that everyone says "Happy Birthday" to her the next day. It was then that I realized that, WOW, October is 2/3 over... Time flies when you are having fun!
Anyway, I know I am posting this on Ellie's birthday but this isn't the official "Birthday post" this is just to catch you up on everything up to this morning! Sorry in advance that these are in reverse order!

Ellie and I wit post walk hugs... Yay, we did it! Now, lets go home and get warm!!!
Ellie caught taking her post walk pee-pee.
So many people showed up despite the rain and cold!
Way to go!!
The start of the walk... About two minutes later Ellie told me just how cold she was and that she wanted to go home and take a warm bath. We only did the 1 mile instead of the 5K but hey, we still did it!!!
Our walking buddies.
Ellie and I before the walk. It was 36.5 degrees when we left the house and it was raining. When we got to the walk site (only about 10 minutes north) there was slush in the grass where it had sowed and a car parked not far away covered in snow. Ellie was bundled up: Soccer socks, leg warmers, warm up pants, an undershirt, a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, her race shirt, and her winter coat. Then 2 fleece blankets wrapped around her.
Saturday...
We went to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs... what else do you do on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon?
Soup and fried rice at Wegman's for lunch that Ellie insisted on calling dinner... What a silly girl!
Slurping noodles.
Monday evening...
Ellie and I met up with Rachel and the Wigging's before they departed for a new adventure... Germany! Good luck!

Sunday, October 11...
Ellie hosting one of her fabulous tea parties with only the finest guests in attendance!
This is a good time to tell you one of her latest...
On our way home from church Ellie was talking about boo-boos in the back seat and this is how the rest of the conversation went...
E: "And I'm going to have boo-boos on my belly, and my cheek, and my other cheek, and..."
MB: "Ell, is your butt broken?"
E: "My butt broken?"
MB: "Yes, is your butt broken?"
E: Slightly confused look
MB: "Well, you have a crack in it!" And without missing a beat...
E: "Look Mommy..."
MB: I look in the rear view mirror and see her dress pulled up and panties pulled to the side.
E: "I've got a crack in my gina too!" and Ellie grinning ear to ear!
OK kiddo, you got me and yes I deserved that! :)
This is the box that Ellie mad for me for my birthday... Isn't it beautiful? I love it!
MB, Ellie, and my box.
Ellie helping me open my gift... And what a wonderful gift!!
Saturday...
We went to Party in the Park, an all day festival benefiting the Nikki Perlow Foundation. There was a magician, vendors, multiple moon bounces, food, and live music.
Ellie's first taste of the sweet stuff.
Ellie helping to clean up the "sunshine".
Ellie listening to Milkshake, a nationally known children's music group. She recognized their songs from Noggin and Sprout.
Taking a break and enjoying the day.
After they were done singing we bought a CD for the car and Ellie even got it signed! I think I may be creating a groupie!
After lunch... we shared a gyro and french fries. Yum!!
Down, down, down the bouncy slide!
Another story...
This morning Ellie and I were laying in bed cuddling before starting our day and we were talking about birthdays. This is what followed...

MB: "Ell, do you know who's birthday was yesterday?"
Ell: "Who's?"
MB: "Uncle Larry"
Ell: No response
MB: "Do you remember Uncle Larry?"
Ell: Shakes her head no
MB: "Do you remember Aunt Donna?"
Ell: She nods. "Yes"
MB: "Well, Uncle Larry is Aunt Donna's husband and they live in Georgia."
Ell: Leans over and whispers in my ear, "He's got no hair."
MB: Smiling. "Ell, that's right. You do remember him."

Saturday evening (pictures thanks to Meme and Papoo) I went to dinner with a friend and while I was away there was quite a production! Meme, Ellie, and Papoo worked on my Treasure box.
Ellie and Papoo painting it pink.
And sharing stories while they work!
And making sure that there aren't any globs of paint. I am told that she did it all almost totally by herself... What a big girl! I am so very proud!
Wednesday...
The bottomless pit.
Ellie was a little hungry (yes I feed her, this is growth spurt kind of hungry) and asked for this for dinner. This is 2 kid's breakfasts: A mouse pancake, bacon, 1 scrambled egg, potatoes, toast, chocolate milk, and for good measure she stole some of my french fries. She ate about 3/4s of all of this too! Amazing!

Last Minute Trip to NC

Well, this weekend sure was not planned this way but then again they say the best way to make God laugh is to tell him that you have a plan. Anyway, last Wednesday I was truly saddened to find out that a Chemistry professor of mine from High Point U had passed away from complications from pneumonia that he caught during his recovery from a stroke a few weeks earlier. More than just a professor, Dr. Charlie Warde was an adviser, a mentor, and the best teacher ever. He not only believed in me but he had a way to make me try harder to be better than I thought I could ever be. He held my hand in times of trouble and doubt and encouraged me with his words not only in academics but in life in general. He will truly be missed.
That being said, here is our weekend...Monday on the trip home Ellie finally crashed! Later, after she woke up, she swore to me that she wasn't sleeping. She claimed she was hiding her head in her blanket. She sure is full of baloney!!
Rosie and I hanging with George Washington on Sunday afternoon.
The display at the reception after Dr Warde's memorial service.
Rosie and I after Dr Warde's memorial service. She finally made it and was only in town for 14 hours but I am so glad to have been able to see her... It has been about 3 years since I had seen her last!
Kristle and I after the memorial service for Dr. Warde. This may be the last pregnant photo of Kristle. Here she is 3 days past her due date and that was on Sunday, Tuesday evening she had a healthy baby boy, Sawyer Levi. Congrats Kristle, Nathan, and Jennings!!

The University Center Multiplex that has 2 resident halls, a complimentary arcade and movie theater, convenience store, book store, putting green in the courtyard, a bakery/ cafe, a non-alcoholic sports bar, a study, and a steak house (which is still under construction on the 4th floor). Amazing!
